it's time to grow

The YWCA Pierce County pioneered safe housing for domestic violence victims more than three decades ago, and is taking the bold step of expanding desperately needed shelter services. The first domestic violence shelter in Washington state, the YWCA remains the largest in Pierce County.

It's time to improve and expand!

More space will offer the women and children served greater healing and dignity. Women and children fleeing violence will be afforded the peace of their own apartment unit.

Safety

The YWCA Pierce County's clients, from infants to seniors, deserve safety and privacy as they heal after fleeing abuse. Due to space constraints, over 200 requests for shelter are denied monthly despite the fact that the YWCA has the largest domestic violence shelter in the county--this is why a new, bigger space is needed.

Healing

The new shelter space offers families room to play, study, and have meals together. It will also offer 25 additional beds, a 50% increase.

Empowerment

While the current YWCA shelter is ADA accessible, individual apartment units will offer clients with special needs more space.

Family--Pets, Too!

Less than ten percent of shelters nation-wide allow pets in their domestic violence shelter--the YWCA has done so for years. The extra space offered in the new shelter will provide more comfortable accommodations for families with pets.

Peace

Violence behind closed doors hurts families--women, men, and children. From 2002 to 2006, women killed by a domestic partner in the US outnumbered soldiers killed in Iraq by 33 percent. For over three decades, the YWCA has brought safety and hope to families fleeing violence 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
